Technology has emerged that allows studying gene expression and function in many more organisms than before. Hence, new model organisms can be established thereby broadening the field of questions that can be asked in terms of gene function. However, establishing a functional genetics technique may be out of the comfort zone of respective researchers and a lot of usually non-published knowledge is required for pursuing a promising approach.
